Bolinas Beach House With Ties to Rock and Roll History Seeks $16M

Over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, past the rolling hills of the Marin Headlands, and beyond Stinson Beach lies the town of Bolinas, CA.

It’s served as a haven for musicians and artists for decades. The private enclave is known for being difficult to find—thanks to locals pulling down the road signs, so the lore goes.

The secluded spot is home to celebrities such as Frances McDormand and Joel Coen, and Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins.

And it’s here that a beach house with some serious rock ‘n’ roll history is now available for $16 million. The residence was last sold in 1997 for $900,000. Over the past three decades, the homeowners made significant upgrades. As a result, the four-bedroom, 4,074-square-foot charmer is “beachfront perfection” with 300 feet of beach frontage.

Built in 1920, the waterfront abode has served as a bathhouse, a casino, and even a teahouse.

In the 1960s, retail guru Susie Tompkins Buell’s family owned the retreat. The co-founder of the clothing brand Esprit and The North Face said living on the property instilled in her a “profound sense of nature.”

In the early 1970s, Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick and guitarist Paul Kantner owned the home.

Slick, who famously sang “We Built This City (on Rock and Roll),” built a guitar-shaped pool on the property. Enhanced with gold and copper mosaic tiles, and sun and moon motifs, the design features a distinctive bronze dolphin designed by Marin sculptor Peter Bishop Allen.

Reportedly, the home is also a place where Slick and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead would jam.

From the property’s entry, a stone archway with a keystone beckons. The creation was by Doug Bryant of A Lost Art Stonework.

The main living area boasts a fireplace and cathedral ceiling with exposed trusses, wood paneling, and hardwood flooring. Sea views are visible from all the rooms, and multilevel limestone patios create spaces for indoor-outdoor living.

The dining area and chef’s kitchen are framed by windows for a front-row sunset view. The chef’s kitchen serves up a farmhouse sink, large center island, and plentiful storage.
