Ultimate Prepper’s Property—With a Gold Mine—Is Listed for $5.75M


Attention, preppers and entrepreneurs: The historic Rackensack Mine property in Cave Creek, AZ, has it all.

“I’ve never seen a property like this one,” says listing agent Preston Westmoreland, of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. He and co-listing agent Barbara Miller make a practice of seeking out unique, off-the-grid properties.

This particular offering “has it all, especially for these turbulent times,” adds Westmoreland.

It comes with a rain-harvesting system with storage tanks, solar energy capture and storage, several dwellings, and even a helipad. But the highlight might be the dozens of underground tunnels that were once part of a working gold mine.

Priced at $5,750,000, the 62-acre spread is in the Tonto National Forest. An easement road provides access to the property, which is about 15 miles from Scottsdale.

Most of the mining dried up in the 1930s, but the area remained a popular destination for those who wanted to get away from it all, without being too far away from it all.

This former mine was once a popular attraction offering tours of the network of tunnels. A new owner could attempt to revive this offering.

This property could generate revenue in other ways as well. The acreage includes 14 potential homesites, Westmoreland notes. It could work as a corporate retreat, eco-tourism spot, glamping area, or a wilderness bed-and-breakfast.

The property comes with a fitness center and yoga studio. The facility known as Sky Dancer sits on a scenic hilltop overlooking the national forest. It features patios, a grill, a bubbling spa, and a fire pit.

The main residence features an open floor plan, and there are two adjacent casitas with a single bedroom each.

It’s difficult for Westmoreland to estimate the total number of bedrooms on the property, because so many of the rooms can serve multiple purposes.

Sitting at a 4,500-foot elevation, the property is usually about 15 degrees cooler than nearby Scottsdale.

And those cool and dry underground tunnels? Westmoreland says folks have shown interest in using them as storage for wine, food, and art.

The sellers have had the property for over 20 years, and they enjoy many of the luxuries of city life, without the crowds “and without the utility bills,” says Westmoreland.

It’s hard to put a price on this property, because there are absolutely no comparables in the area, or anywhere else in the country.

“This one’s unique,” he says. “And there are no limits to its possibilities.”
